Arches watercolour papers are cylinder mould made using pure French stream water and only the finest long fiber cotton that produces uniformity, adaptability and longevity.  They are gelatin-sized, air dried and free from lignin, acid and chlorine making them durable and resilient.  Being made on a cylinder mould means the cylinder enable the fibres to be deposited evenly and spread in all directions over the wire.  The result of the even distribution of the fibres is the paper uniformly slackens when wet giving the artist more control. This process can produce papers with a high grammage and exceptional resistance to scratching and erasing, when they are gelatin sized to the core.  Cylinder mould also produces paper with deckle edges.  Arches 100% long cotton fibre composition gives the paper its beauty, a natural lasting whiteness, and an inimitable touch as well as strength.  Exclusive to Arches gelatin sizing to the core preserves the lustre and transparency of the colours while preventing paints from penetrating into the paper.  It allows super imposing of washes and gives it added strength to resist erasing and scratching without tearing or linting.  It also allows paints to be removed, either wet or dry, easily revealing the whiteness of the paper.  Paper can absorb a large amount of water with limited deformation.  Even if the paper is soaked for a long time, the paper will still retain enough gelation not to become too absorbent.  Hot pressed papers are smooth allowing washes to run freely and will give the artist the most detail.  Cold pressed papers have some texture giving washes a bit of resistance will still providing some detail.  Rough papers have a significant amount of texture giving the most resistance to a wash as well as the least amount of detail.

XL watercolour pads are 140lb cold pressed paper.  They work beautifully for a variety of techniques.   It has a durable surface which is able to withstand repeated washes.  Can be used with watercolour, acrylic, pen and ink, marker, coloured pencil, graphite, charcoal and pastel.
